MAYS LANDING - Officials at the Atlantic County jail had their hands full when a fight broke out among the inmates Sunday afternoon.

According to County Executive Dennis Levinson, who reported to the jail soon after the riot ended, the fight broke out sometime in mid-afternoon in the H Pod section of the jail.

Officers stopped the fight quickly, Levinson said. He did not know what caused the altercation.

"It doesn't take much," Levinson said. "It could have been over a pair of sneakers or socks or a Clark Bar."

One corrections officer was sent to Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point with minor injuries but he was released a short time later, Levinson said.

The person answering the phone at the jail Sunday evening referred all questions to warden Gary Merline, who was not available.

Levinson said the facility is overcrowded and that may have been a contributing factor in the fight.

"We have quite a few state prisoners that are in there," Levinson said. "Quite a few that are awaiting trial that have committed serious crimes. We want to get that overcrowding under control and get those state prisoners in state prisons, rather than warehousing them in our facility."
